DeSantana’s Commitment to Safe and Secure Stone Shipment

At DeSantana, the beauty and integrity of our natural stone products are paramount—and that care extends far beyond the quarry or finishing process. We take exceptional measures to ensure that each piece, regardless of size or weight, arrives at its destination in pristine condition.

Here's how we do it:

  • Secure Strapping & Palletizing: Our stone products are securely strapped to heavy-duty pallets, stabilizing the load for forklift handling and minimizing risk during loading and unloading.Custom Crating

  • Protective Padding: Natural fiber palm strands are used to cushion delicate edges and surfaces. These materials absorb vibrations and protect against abrasions or scratches.

  • Transportation Services: Our transporters are skilled with heavy shipments and the extra care that need to be taken to assure that our stone products arrive safely and undamaged.

Whether destined for a private residence, commercial installation, or international distributor, DeSantana ensures that each piece of stone is packed with the same level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that defines our brand.

INSTALLATION

When installing Cantera stone, a naturally porous volcanic stone popular in architectural detailing, it's essential to consider the local climate, environmental conditions, and proximity to water features. These factors can significantly affect the longevity and performance of the stone. For the best results, it’s highly recommended to consult a professional custom stone installer who can advise on the most effective installation and preservation methods specific to your setting.

Installation & Preparation Steps

1. Sealing Stone is Often Recommended

Consult with your professional installer for recommendations. Depending on exposure conditions, sealing may be advised to protect Cantera from water infiltration and environmental damage. De Santana cannot be held responsible for any color changes that occur after the application of the sealer, or for any discoloration resulting from moisture wicking into the stone post-installation.

  • Use high-quality, breathable sealers: These penetrating sealers help prevent moisture entry while still allowing trapped vapor to escape.

  • Apply multiple coats: Usually, two or more coats are applied, with the second coat added before the first fully cures (“wet-on-wet” method).

  • Re-seal periodically: Every 1–3 years based on climate and wear from use or weather.

  • Backside and Edge Sealing

  • Especially in humid or wet environments—or when stone is installed near water features—it’s advisable to seal all sides, including the back and edges. This helps reduce water absorption from hidden or less visible surfaces where drying is more difficult.

2. Correct Mortar and Grout Selection

Use non-expansive, low-alkaline, breathable mortars. Avoid mortars or adhesives that can trap moisture.

For freeze-prone areas, use flexible polymer-modified mortars to accommodate expansion and contraction.

Grout should also be non-staining, breathable, and mold-resistant.

3. Slope and Drainage

Ensure adequate slope on horizontal surfaces (e.g., caps, steps, benches) to shed water.

Never allow standing water on or near Cantera surfaces.

Integrate weep holes or drainage planes behind wall cladding systems to prevent water entrapment.

Water Features & High-Humidity Installations

  • Use waterproof membranes under and around water features.

  • Avoid full submersion: While Cantera is often used near water, it should not remain fully submerged long-term without specialized waterproofing and sealing protocols.

  • Consider a drainage mat behind vertical surfaces to allow evaporation and avoid hydrostatic pressure.

Freeze-Thaw Zone Considerations

  • Avoid saturation: In freeze-prone areas, any moisture that penetrates the stone and freezes can cause internal cracking or spalling.

  • Ensure excellent drainage and sealing, and avoid direct contact with snowmelt or pooling water.

  • Use de-icing alternatives: Avoid salts or harsh chemical deicers, which can damage the stone. Use calcium magnesium acetate as a safer alternative.

Coastal Region Tips (Salt Exposure)

  • Use salt-resistant sealers to reduce salt intrusion and efflorescence.

  • Rinse surfaces periodically to remove salt residue.

  • Avoid direct placement where ocean spray accumulates without regular maintenance.

Additional Tips

  • Store Cantera stone in a dry, covered area prior to installation.

  • Avoid pressure washing with high PSI; use low-pressure and pH-neutral cleaners.

  • Mock up a sample area to test sealers and ensure aesthetic and functional suitability.
